It was a bit of an unusual day at Neighbors in Need this morning. Volunteers agreed that nearly half of our Neighbor guests had never attended before. Our pantry welcomed, of course, each newcomer and asked how they found us. Most said that they heard about Neighbors in Need at the cold weather shelter. We’re so glad they gave us a try.
The first visit to an event such as our NiN breakfast can be stressful. “Am I truly welcome?” “Is it OK to use the restroom?” “Is it OK to ask for seconds?” “Is it OK to linger with a cup of coffee?” “Can my life-giving pet come inside?” etc., etc. Our volunteers are smart with their boundaries and genuine with their welcome. Neighbors in Need is truly a neighborhood.
The breakfast team from Gloria Dei was up to accommodate the large count. They prepared extra large quantities of biscuits and gravy, sausages, fruit juice, milk, and burritos. They served 133 plates. That’s a record! They also served bagged breakfast treats for Neighbor dogs. What a confirmation to our Neighbors that we respect the importance of a pet’s love.
The pantry provided grocery bags for 78 Neighbors. Thank you to Advocates Recovery Services for adding hoagie sandwiches and several dozen sack lunches to our salads and fruits from the food bank. It was a day of generosity.
The very cold weather underscores the value of our clothing bank. Warm jackets and extra socks were a big deal this morning. We were reminded that the Lynnwood community cares. There were several large donations of winter clothing dropped off.
With thanks for your prayers and support.
